There are other
variations of geocaching:

What is
Geocaching?
1.
Someone hides a cache (a small stash or treasure) somewhere
on the planet. Often caches are found in Tupperware
ammunition boxes or other weather friendly packages.
2. A GPS is used to get the latitude and longitude of
the spot. Any helpful hints to help locate the cache are
also recorded.
3. The individual who hides the cache enters the
location information at the Geocaching web site, http://www.geocaching.com/
4. Someone else who wishes to seek a cache finds the
cache location information on the Geocaching web site.
5. The seeker uses their GPS to search and locate the
cache.
6. When the cache is found the seeker will typically
make an entry in the cache's log book, take an item from the
cache and leave an item.
7. The seeker then returns to the Geocaching web site
to record their find in the cache's online log. This way the
owner of the cache can be kept up to date on their cache's
activity.
8. And there you have it... Geocaching.
Those are the basics. There are variations on these basic
concepts that bring extra excitement to the sport. Some
variations include caches which lead you to other caches,
hitchhikers which travel from cache to cache, and virtual
caches to name a few. To learn more go to the
Geocaching
web site.
How to get
Started!
1. Go to
http://www.geocaching.com/
2. On the left side of screen, click on "MY CACHE
PAGE"
3. Click on "Create a new account" (5th entry on
page)
4. Name, e-mail address, a username, password and
Country are compulsory. Other details can be added later.
However if you have stepped outside with your GPS and recorded
your home co-ordinates (see 5.) enter these as you will be
supplied with a list of caches within a hundred mile zone (yes
miles this is a U.S.A programme)
5. Under settings on your GPS change to WGS84 datum
as this is the universal data used in Geocaching Instead of
minutes & seconds it converts to metric. In the southern
hemisphere we are South and East, check out the
coordinates above for examples
